Gartner’s Digital Communications Governance market guide: What you need to know

Gartner‘s recent foray into Digital Communications Governance (DCG) marks a pivotal moment in the tech landscape. With the introduction of the DCG Market Guide, they’ve set a solid foundation, outlining what defines a DCG vendor and providing insightful guidance into this evolving domain.

One striking projection from Gartner forecasts that “By 2027, 65% of enterprise customers will merge supervision of text- and audio/video-based content for communication governance, a significant increase from less than 15% in 2023.”

This prediction underscores a profound transition from conventional electronic communications to a broader digital scope encompassing all forms of interactions in the digital workplace. This shift, inclusive of typed, shared, spoken, and visualised content, significantly impacts compliance and governance strategies.

While organisations strategise on empowering end-users and embracing diverse modalities like voice, video, text, and whiteboards, traditional compliance methods such as email and on-premise voice archives are fading. The advent of unified communications and collaboration platforms, integrating VOIP, demands the preservation of voice communications for compliance. Yet, existing voice archiving investments may not seamlessly adapt to this new paradigm. A Gartner-suggested approach calls for a transition to a more inclusive SaaS, cloud-based model, encompassing all communication formats—textual, visual, and audio.

Gartner’s Market Guide doesn’t just outline expectations but offers tangible recommendations. One critical suggestion urges businesses to select DCG solutions seamlessly integrated with employees’ commonly used tools and proficient in adopting new data sources.

This recommendation resonates deeply with Theta Lake, a pioneer in DCG since 2017. The firm’s proactive stance in building platforms tailored for compliance and security in modern unified communication and collaboration sets it apart from legacy vendors anchored in email or voice-recording legacies. This distinction ensures a superior customer experience across unified voice, visual, video, chat, and file modalities.

Gartner’s categorisation of “Must Have,” “Standard,” and “Optional” DCG capabilities echoes Theta Lake’s philosophy. While some critical aspects are labelled “Optional,” Theta Lake advocates that these functionalities should be considered foundational. For instance, ensuring comprehensive reconciliation and auditing of captured communications stands paramount, given the staggering fines of £2.5bn due to insufficient record-keeping. The company believes such robust reconciliation capabilities are imperative in any DCG offering.

Theta Lake’s dedication to the DCG market is apparent through direct investments in DCG capabilities and certified partnerships with digital communications leaders such as Slack, Zoom, Cisco, and RingCentral. With a portfolio boasting double-digit patents and technology across key DCG categories outlined in Gartner’s guide—Archive, In-Place Integration, Investigation, Compliance, Governance, Analytics, and Trade Reconstruction—Theta Lake has garnered over 100 customers across seven countries, earning a resounding 100% ‘Would Recommend’ Rating and an outstanding 4.9 out of 5-star rating via Gartner Peer Insights.
