European Parliament calls for greater consumer protections in AI

The European Parliament has called for new rules which will protect consumers with interactions involving AI and automated decision-making (ADM).

Its resolution addresses several challenges arising from the use of these technology types.

The parliament is particularly welcoming to the potential of ADM to create improve services to consumers such as virtual assistants and chatbots. However, it said, “properly informed about how it functions, about how to reach a human with decision-making powers, and about how the system’s decisions can be checked and corrected.”

These systems should use high-quality and unbiased sets and algorithms, the regulator said. Furthermore, it believes review structures should be established to fix mistakes in automated decisions and provide consumers a way to seek compensation for these decisions.

In the resolution, it said, “Humans must always be ultimately responsible for, and able to overrule, decisions that are taken in the context of professional services such as the medical, legal and accounting professions, and for the banking sector.”

The parliament is calling for a risk-assessment scheme for AI and ADM and for a common EU approach to secure benefits of the solutions while mitigating the risks.

Following this announcement, the resolution will be sent to the EU Council and the Commission to get their thoughts.
