US consumers have a growing appetite for biometric authentication services, according to a new study from Veridium.
The Biometric Consumer Sentiment Survey received response of over 1,000 US adults who have experience using biometrics to log into their accounts. Results show that 70 per cent of respondents stated they would like to increase the use of biometrics into the workplace.
Reasons given for why they like biometrics include speed (35 per cent), security (31 per cent) and not having to remember passwords (33 per cent).
Fingerprint scanning was the most preferred method of identification, with 63 per cent of the participants support. Following this was facial recognition, traditional passwords and voice recognition, with 14, 8, and 2 per cent of responses, respectively.
There is also an increasing reliance on biometric authentication for services, with 80 per cent using the tech to unlock devices, and 35 per cent using it to access financial services. In addition to this, 31 per cent said they use it for making payments, 11 per cent stated its use in travel and 10 per cent in healthcare.
While the desire for biometrics is increasing, trust levels are still not as high as they should be. When asked if they feel companies are storing their biometric data ethically, 57 per cent were either unsure or neutral. Only 35 per cent of the participants stated they felt businesses were their storing data ethically.
Veridium CEO James Stickland said, “The pace of mobile device innovation is moving at lightning speed, and as a result, we’ve seen an uptick in the adoption of biometric technologies in consumer-facing apps.
“With biometric authentication becoming more mainstream, enterprises are well positioned to introduce the technology to their employees to create a fast, secure and frictionless experience when logging into workplace networks and applications.”
Different age groups had different preferences, with millennials using biometrics for financial services, generation X using it for travel and baby boomers mostly using It with healthcare.
