Security giant Akamai to acquire Guardicore in $600m deal

Edge security and content deliver firm Akamai Technologies is set to purchase micro-segmentation company Guardicore for a total of $600m.

According to Security Week, Akamai claimed the deal would add new capabilities to help customers thwart ransomware attacks by blocking the spread of malware within an already-compromised enterprise.

Tel-Aviv-based Guardicore is a late-stage startup whose platform seeks to block malicious lateral movement through the creation of silos between servers, operating systems, cloud instances and applications.

Guardicore’s micro-segmentation technology is considered to be a big part of the Zero Trust security approach, with Akamai expecting to feature the new capabilities alongside its web application firewall and secure web gateway product lines.

Akamai said, “Guardicore’s micro-segmentation solution is designed to limit user access to only those applications that are authorized to communicate with each other. By denying communication as the default, the threat surface and risk exposure are drastically reduced, thereby limiting the spread of malware and protecting the flow of enterprise data across the network.

“This protection extends beyond the data center to the cloud, including bare metal, virtual machines and containers”
