A Russian official has stated a ‘direct military clash’ could occur if Western governments continue to mount cyberattacks against its infrastructure.
In a statement first reported by Reuters and picked up by Cyberscoop, the Russian foreign ministry’s head of international information security said, “The militarization of the information space by the West and attempts to turn it into an arena of interstate confrontation, have greatly increased the threat of a direct military clash with unpredictable consequences.”
This follows not long after Russia’s housing ministry website was hacked with traffic to it redirecting to a sign stating, ‘Glory to Ukraine’.
Reuters noted that the foreign ministry’s statement blamed US and Ukrainian figures for the attacks on its critical infrastructure.
The Russia statement said, “Rest assured, Russia will not leave aggressive actions unanswered. All our steps will be measured, targeted, in accordance with our legislation and international law.”
Zurich Insurance Group recently agreed to sell its business in Russia to 11 members of the unit’s team following mounting pressure on financial institutions and insurers to cut ties with the region.
