Oney Bank, Wirecard to launch Romania’s first biometric payment system

Oney Bank has teamed with Wirecard to launch the first biometric payment system in Romania.

The Well.com app is now available in Romania and plans are in place to expand its presence to Hungary, Poland and Ukraine.

Oney Bank is part of the French retail group Auchan and is the direct banking and financial arm of Auchan Retail Romania which has annual turnovers of over €1.2 bn. Customers of the bank will now be able to use the mobile app to authenticate payments through the scanning of their fingerprints.

Initially, users will be able to utilise the app for payments within 30 Auchan stores in Romania. In the future, the bank is hoping to enable the app as a payment method for other countries and merchants.

Well.com lets users pay with their fingerprint or QR code and integrates with the Wirecard mobile wallet. Wirecard offers a selection of payment and processing capabilities both offline and online.

Oney Bank Romania director general Jean-Michel Goncalves said, “Payment methods are continuously improving, and we would like Romanian customers to experience the latest technologies. One step in doing so is Well.com, an innovative solution that leverages the expertise of Wirecard in the area of digital payments. Throughout this year, we are looking forward to developing new functionalities, that will further improve the shopping experience in Romania and beyond.”

Last year, Wirecard formed a partnership with Crédit Agricole Payment services, to develop new e-commerce payment solutions. The new partners teamed to support the international development of customers via its centralised platform that supports acceptance and acquiring across Europe.
