NEXT Biometrics, MK Group partner for R&D program for biometric cards

NEXT Biometrics has teamed with MK Group to launch an R&D scheme for biometric smart cards.

The program will integrate NEXT’s biometrics fingerprint scanners with MK’s smart card solutions in order to support banking and similar applications.

MK Group is hoping to incorporate biometric solutions into its future products and has picked NEXT’s One Touch Flex CT-150 sensors for the use in trials.

Both companies will be working together to build the platform, with this anticipated to start in the coming weeks.

Vietnam-based MK Group designs a number of authentication and smart card products, including smart payments, identification and exchange data, digital id and transaction and communication data. The company’s technology is used across by for financial, telecommunication and retail enterprises across South East Asia.

NEXT chief sales and marketing officer Alain Faburel said, “As the industry moves toward biometric solutions for card-based transactions, companies like MK Group are leading the way toward accelerating this trend. We’re very pleased to have our technology considered for MK Group’s future product lineup.”

Seattle-based Next Biometrics is a fingerprint sensor solution which designs a variety of ID scanners for the smart card, government ID, access control and notebook markets.

There has been a wave of activity within the biometric card space. Last week, Zwipe partnered with Smart Technology to launch a biometric card production system which financial institutions could implement into their card production systems. Zwipe also teamed up with Allcard for the creation of biometric cards for the Pilipino market.

MasterCard were also among the companies making moves in the space, having signed a deal with FIME to provide identification testing services to its new biometric software.

Last week, New York University researchers found that machine learning technology was capable of creating fake images of fingerprints which can fall scanning systems.
