Zwipe, Smart Technology partner for biometric card production system

Biometric technology developer Zwipe has partnered with Smart Technology to lower time to market and manufacturing costs for biometric payment cards.

This partnership will see the companies work together to develop, test and launch a complete manufacturing solution which will allow card manufacturers and issuers to implement a production environment for biometric cards.

The companies will release packaging solutions which include chip and sensor packaging, adhesion processes, equipment manufacturing, process settings, test procedures and technical assistance.

By doing this, card manufacturers will be able to quickly set up a system to produce and personalise biometric cards.

An initial release for this solution is expected to be in Q1 2019.

Zwipe develops biometric technology for payments, access control and identity. The Norway-based company has built a payment card which has an embedded fingerprint scanner which verifies the transaction at the point-of-sale.

The EMV compliant card uses near field communication technology to take the energy it needs to power the contactless payment and fingerprint scanning/verifying.

Smart Technology Services CEO Thierry Buisson said, “The implementation of fingerprint sensors in ISO-thin payment cards presents some manufacturing challenges and requires particular manufacturing and testing processes that we believe we have made the most advancements in the world in addressing.

“Zwipe’s and Smart Technology Services’ joint offering will eliminate the need for card manufacturers and issuers to conduct long, complex and expensive experiments before finding the right solution to manufacture and deploy biometric cards, ensuring that we will offer the most competitive and agile solution to this rapidly growing marketplace.”

Smart Technology develops support services and card personalisation solutions for card manufacturers and bureaus.

This is the second partnership Zwipe has formed this week in an attempt to bolster biometric cards. The company recently formed a deal with Allcard to launch biometric payment cards across the Philippines.
