Counterflow raises $2.7m for AI-based security platform

US cybersecurity startup Counterflow AI has raised $2.7m in seed funding to develop a network forensics platform for threat hunting.

The round of investment came from Osage University Partners, the Charlottesville Angel Network, and several individual investors.

CounterFlow AI hopes to help cybersecurity analysts use artificial intelligence to identify, evaluate and eliminate threats to their networks.

CounterFlow AI claims to be redefining the art of the hunt by adopting a target-centric approach to defending the network.  The company’s flagship product, Dragonfly Threat Sensor, is a threat detection and response platform that combines signature inspection, machine learning (ML), and adaptive packet capture to actively hunt, detect, and respond to zero-day exploits and malicious activities.

The Dragonfly Threat Sensor claims to be the first cyber security platform designed to operationalise machine learning using F3EA, a highly-effective military targeting methodology.

It can detect anomalous and malicious activity using ML models, triage and contextualize threat indicators with intelligence, drive automation to alert, contain, and mitigate attacks, extract, transform, and load artifacts from PCAP and log files, as well as train and deploy machine learning models with exploited data.

The early-stage company, which is currently operating in semi-stealth mode, was co-founded last year by Randy Caldejon, Peter Shaw, Erik Breuhaus and Andrew Fast.

Caldejon and Shaw previously co-founded nPulse Technologies, a network security firm that was later acquired by FireEye. Shaw previously held senior marketing and product management roles at Endace, Allied Telesyn, and Hewlett Packard.

Prior to FireEye, Caldejon founded nPulse Technologies, which helped financial institutions, government agencies, telecommunications carriers, and other organizations enhance network security monitoring, shorten incident response times, and increase returns on existing cybersecurity investment.

Fast joined CounterFlow from a position as chief scientist of Elder Research,., a data science consulting firm, where he worked with hundreds of companies to expand their data science capabilities. Prior to CounterFlow, Breuhaus served multiple startups across varying industries, most recently at a venture-backed IoT systems company PsiKick. While a part of these startups, he played a role in raising over $30M in both venture investment and grant funding.
