ASB launches facial biometric onboarding service

ASB Bank has implemented biometric facial recognition technology into its mobile app.

Its biometric app will enable customers to verify their identities by comparing pictures of themselves with a photo of their New Zealand drivers’ license or passport, removing the need of going to the bank to open accounts.

A pilot programme in Auckland and Christchurch was held earlier in the year to test the system, and it has now fully launched after positive feedback and will enhance customer experiences.

To create its biometrics solution, the company partnered with Vix Verify, a global developer of identity verification services such biometric recognition, mobile onboarding, and fraud detection.

The new ID service is available to new customers wishing to open an ASB bank account from anywhere in New Zealand. It takes around 15 minutes to complete and lets customers begin transacting later the same day.

ASB executive general manager Claire McKinnon “During our pilot, there were a lot of comments about how convenient the ASB ID app was for people wanting to join without the need to visit a branch. The app streamlines the process of opening an account with ASB, making it quicker and easier for our customers.”

There has been a lot of interest in the capabilities and opportunities of biometrics over recent weeks.

It was recently reported that Singapore is eyeing a National Digital Identity Facial Biometric System, which would help banks and hospitals to verify identities quicker.

Earlier this week, payment card manufacturer Zwipe partnered with Allcard to launch a dual-interface biometric payment cards across the Philippines.
