Cybersecurity startup Stealth Security has raised $8m through its Series A round, which was led by Shasta Ventures.
Created and managed by a team of former PayPal, Cisco and Symantec senior executives, Stealth Security said the money will be used to address the growing challenge of detecting and mitigating today’s increasingly sophisticated bots, which current defense solutions fail to address.
Using real-time network analysis, machine learning, threat intelligence and behavioural analytics the company detects and mitigates bot attacks without affecting legitimate user traffic. It claims to different itself from competitors by providing products which are designed to be modularly deployable into an existing security stack. Protecting over 100 million accounts at Fortune 100 companies today, Stealth Security is headquartered in Silicon Valley and backed by Shasta Ventures, along with a host of other prominent investors.
“Humans don’t account for most of the activity online—bots do,” said Stealth CEO and co-Founder Ameya Talwalkar. “Businesses are seeing more and more transactions from legitimate automated traffic, like IoT devices, search engines, aggregators and B-to-B integrations. In real-time, Stealth Security can differentiate between malicious bot activity and legitimate users and bots, as well as deceptively mitigate in response. It’s our unique advantage.”
From financial services to insurance, ecommerce, and travel – some of the world’s largest companies rely on Stealth Security to detect and mitigate a wide range of attacks that evade traditional security tools according to its website.
The business was co-founded by Ameya Talwalker, Michael Barrett and Shreyans Mehta. Before co-founding Stealth, Talwalker was director of Engineering at Symantec. He was responsible for its anti-malware software stack that leverages network Intrusion prevention and behavior and reputation technologies, and anti-virus engines. Mehta was previous an architect and technical director at Symantec, where he led the development of one of the most advanced network security platforms and intrusion prevention technologies based on real-time packet inspection and cloud-based big data analytics.
Before founding Stealth, Barrett was the first president of the FIDO Alliance, an open standards organisation focused on authentication. Prior to this, he was PayPal’s first chief information security officer and held that role for seven years. He also served as vice president of security and utility strategy at American Express, where he helped define the company’s information security program and Internet technology strategy.
