Sberbank is investing what could be the biggest Russian banking leak ever

Russian lender Sberbank is facing the risk of having data about 60 million credit cards being leaked.

Although, Sberbank has issued a statement saying that at least 200 customers were compromised. However, according to a report in the Kommersant newspaper, those 200 were just a sample of the data an online seller claims to have.

The report suggests that 60 million credit cards could have been compromised, including ones that are closed. Sberbank currently has roughly 18 million active credit card customers. If true, Kommersant stated this could be the biggest banking breach ever in Russia, Reuters reports.

Both the Russian newspaper and Sberbank suggest that it might be an inside job.

While potentially huge, it is still fewer than the 106 million accounts affected by the Capital One hack earlier this year. The attack against the American bank happened in March, but was discovered and subsequently announced in July when the alleged hacker was arrested.

The Capital One hack raised a lot concern about the bank’s security. Both politicians and cybersecurity experts said they were disappointed by how the breach had been handled.
