Republic of North Macedonia to launch national identity system with Mastercard

The Republic of North Macedonia’s government has revealed plans for a national digital identity service which is being built in partnership with Mastercard.

This initiative will give citizens the chance to easily prove their identity when accessing government and business services. The goal is to provide citizens of North Macedonia to use it in their daily activities for signing and verification.

Its new digital identity service is based on a distributed model which eliminates the need for a centralized identity database.

Among the new services will be electronic know your customer services for opening new bank accounts and prepaid and postpaid mobile phone accounts.

When launched, the service will foster interactions between government agencies across the region and around the world. This partnership aims to nurture collaboration between governments, banks, mobile network operators, universities and others.

Mastercard is also supporting the electronic-government initiatives and will promote practices from other geographies.

Mastercard president of cyber & intelligence Ajay Bhalla said, “Technology is changing our lives in ways we could have only dreamed just years ago.

“The best solutions come by bringing together strong partners. That’s why we’re pleased to work with the North Macedonian government to address real problems for their citizens. With this service, they can use a digital identity for public services, while maintaining control of their information with security, privacy and trust.”
