Red Balloon to improve security with NHA ATMs

Red Balloon Security is to help Nautilus Hyosung America (NHA) enhance security for its retail ATMs.

The cybersecurity company found two vulnerabilities with retail ATMs and one with NHAs support application. As such, it has embedded defence mechanisms to bolster the security of its ATMs.

NHS has more than 140,000 ATM installations across the US. It has already integrated Red Balloon’s security services but will evaluate additional security mechanisms to incorporate to ensure customers are safe.

Red Balloon offers cybersecurity and research to help protect a variety of system types from threats. Its symbiote solution is a real-time, host-based intrusion defence service which continuously monitors code and protects it from being tampered with.

Red Balloon Security CEO Ang Cui said, “We commend Nautilus Hyosung America for its fast and diligent response to these disclosures, and for taking the appropriate steps to fix these problems.

“If left unaddressed, the vulnerabilities we discovered could have created a potential for exploitation. We look forward to a continuing relationship with Nautilus Hyosung of America to guard against any potential vulnerabilities of their products.”

Research from Positive Technologies showed how vulnerable ATMs can be. Its study found that 69% of the ATMs it had tested could be compromised by ‘black box’ devices which trick the system to dispense banknotes – the attack can take less than ten minutes.
