MasterCard picks FIME to provide biometric identification testing services

MasterCard has chosen FIME to provide biometric authentication testing services for fingerprints, to support its new guidelines for mobile device sensors.

By partnering with FIME, MasterCard will be able to provide device manufacturers and solution providers with tools to monitor their fingerprint scanners, strengthening customer authentication assurance.

FIME’s testing services enables mobile, wearable and sensor manufacturers to monitor the performance and accuracy of mobile fingerprint sensors. Through this, financial service providers are able to evaluate hardware and software integrated into devices and bolster confidence fingerprint scanning is linking with their solutions.

This move from MasterCard comes after it committed to a guarantee that it will give all of its customers access to biometric authentication by April 2019.

The company said that everyone of its consumers will be able to identify themselves with biometrics such as fingerprints or facial recognition, when they shop and pay with Mastercard.

FIME vice president of services Stephanie El Rhomri said, “Biometrics have taken the payments world by storm in recent years, delivering consumers greater convenience and security.

“But in a post-PSD2 and GDPR world, players across mobile and payments are increasingly understanding the importance of performance and quality to ensure customer adoption of new secure authentication solutions. We’re proud to be championing this evaluation program, the first of its kind to be fully ISO-compliant, as we continue to support the ever-expanding role of biometrics in payments.”

Earlier in the year, MasterCard revealed it was looking into blockchain technology to improve its security against identity theft.
