Jumio launches video-selfie authentication service

Jumio, a RegTech 100 company, has launched its new video-selfie authentication solution.

The new Jumio Authentication platform leverages biometrics for initial identity proffering and then ongoing user authentication, establishing a secure and quick verification process.

This new method for authentication will be best suited for account logins and high-risk scenarios, such as logging in from a foreign IP address or authorising high-risk transactions, the company said. In addition to this, the selfie authentication can be used to unlock doors, complete self-check-ins, and continuous security of regularly used services.

Cyber criminals have been able to fool video identification systems in the past by using images, or masks of the victim. In order to combat this, Jumio has integrated FaceTec’s ZoOm 3D Face Login with TrueLiveness Detection, which is an anti-spoofing technology.

Through ZoOm, which is integrated with the Jumio Authentication, the platform is able to capture and process the user’s face images taken from a mobile camera or webcam. Frames are then reconstituted to build a 3D face map which contains over 100-times more liveness data than the original 2D photo, the company states.

To start, a consumer takes a photo of their government-issued ID and then records a video-selfie, which is instantly analysed by an AI to verify if it’s a living human and not a spoof. The selfie is compared to the ID photo and establish the digital identity of the new user.

Once a user wants to login to their account or make a high-risk transaction, the app will ask to take another video-selfie. This will be compared to the original face map and unlock the account within seconds.

Last year, Jumio was selected for the RegTech 100, for a second year in a row. The list compiles all the RegTech companies every financial institution should know about in 2019.
