IDEX partners with Infineon to build biometric cards

IDEX Biometrics has partnered with Infineon Technologies to offer cards with integrated biometric security.

The companies are hoping to merge the fingerprint identification and authentication software of IDEX with the payment cards designed by Infineon.

Biometrics integrated with cards can provide a second level of authentication step and potentially lower the rate of fraud. This can be used across the payments space and can also help to lower transaction times for consumers compared with entering PINs, the companies claim.

To ensure security of data, the biometric information is only stored on the card and not a cloud system. Infineon’s optimised power profile in non-battery supported contactless systems and its transaction performance, will enable biometric payments to be completed in under a second.

The two companies are currently exploring the best way to integrate IDEX’s biometric system into the cards.

Infineon head of payment and wearables Bjoern Scharfen said, “We firmly believe that leveraging the expertise of Infineon and IDEX will allow us to define a sustainable path for a secure biometric ecosystem with highest performance.

“Biometrics are the next innovation step for contactless payment cards, providing additional security and convenience to banks and consumers.”

This is the second partnership IDEX has completed this week in a bid of boosting biometric cards. The company recently made an agreement with Chutian Dragon to develop a dual-facing biometric card.

In addition to this, the company also recently signed a deal with Chinese card company Hengbao to introduce biometric cards in South East Asia.
