Fingerprints, Intesa Sanaolo launch pilot for biometric card in Italy

Fingerprints has partnered with Intesa Sanpaolo to pilot contactless payment card in Italy.

The MasterCard card will be launched in partnership with Gemalto and use technology from Zwipe. Fingerprints will be implementing its biometric authentication solutions to enhance its security and convivence for cardholders.

This will be the first biometric card technology to be piloted in Italy, according to the company.

The card enables clients to verify the identity of holders through a fingerprint recognition solution and can be used at contactless payment terminals. Biometric cards can be used around the world and at any POS terminal or ATM with an EMV Certificate.

A holder collects the card at a branch and their biometric information will be stored on the card. When making a payment they will then need to scan their thumb over the card’s paper sensor which will then activate the card and verify the payment.

Its pilot period will last 16 weeks and will be tested across Turin, Milan and Rome.

Mastercard vice president account leader Antonio Di Meo said, “We are excited to present today this innovative project, together with Intesa Sanpaolo, the first in Italy and in Europe.

“In Mastercard, as a new technology enabler, we work constantly with our partners, to enable cutting-edge technologies, such as biometrics, so that they can improve the daily life of consumers, enriching their payment experience and ensuring simplicity and security with every transaction.”

Fingerprints designs a range of biometric software solutions including cards, smartphones and tablets, and vehicles, among others.
