Controversial Clearview AI reveals its entire client list has been stolen in a breach

Someone has stolen Clearview AI’s full client list as the facial recognition software company is still reeling from the backlash of having scraped public pictures from social media platforms.

The company is denying that the leak was due to a hack, but said it was due to a “flaw” that gave someone unauthorised access to the client list, which includes several law enforcement authorities.

Speaking with Business Insider, Clearview AI’s attorney said security is a top priority for the company, adding, “Unfortunately, data breaches are part of life in the 21st century.”

Peter Thiel-backed Clearview AI has faced a lot of criticism since The New York Times revealed the company had based its facial recognition solution on billions of pictures taken from places like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Venmo.

Google, Twiiter and YouTube has since filed cease and desist orders against Clearview AI. The company is also facing a class-action lawsuit.

Hoan Ton-That, founder and CEO of Clearview AI, has defended its methods, saying it falls under his First Amendment rights to use public information.
