The National Payments Corporation of India gave the company the green light to operate via the Unified Payments Interface after two years of checking out its out application. WhatsApp has been operating pilot operations in India through that time.

“Payments is available now in ten Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp,” Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, said in a statement seen by Bloomberg. “All you need is a debit card with a bank that supports UPI and you can set it up straight away.
