Italian lender UniCredit has announced that it has uncovered a data breach involving private data about three million of its customers.
This is the third incident it has suffered in the past few years, according to a Reuters report.
UniCredit said that the incident had to do with a 2015 file that contained phone numbers and emails of its clients.
In a statement, the bank said no part of the breach affected private detailed that would have allowed the hackers to access customers’ funds.
Nevertheless, the financial services organisation stated that it was contacting potentially affected customers.
UniCredit said that it was investigating the matter internally and that it would not disclose any details about how the hack had happened.
The breach was first noted last Thursday. The police investigating the incident.
Hack attacks are becoming a common fixture for financial services firms. In fact, 70% of companies in the sector had suffered a breach in the past 12 months, according to research from Clearswift, the security firm.
