North Korean is accused of unleashing malware onto the world that attacks Indian ATMs and uses them to steal credit card details.
The new malware is named ATMDtrack and has been spotted by Kaspersky, the cybersecurity experts. The virus is a new strain of DTrack RAT.
ATMDtrack infects ATMs. Once infected, it uses the ATM to read and store data about the cards inserted into the device.
When Kaspersky’s researchers looked into the malware strain, it found several pieces of code that bore close similarities with the DarkSeoul campaign from 2013, suggesting a link to North Korea.
This would not be the first time that North Korea has been accused of using hacking or malware to steal money.
In August, a UN report claimed North Korea had hacked banks and cryptocurrency exchanges, stealing $2bn to fund Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes.
Following the accusations, a spokesperson from the National Coordination Committee of the DPRK for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering of the Financing of Terrorism issued a statement denying the accusations.
Instead, it accused the west and the US in particular of using “ill-hearted rumours” to tarnish the image of North Korea.
