Hong Kong businesses fail to provide cybersecurity training for remote workers

While 79% of Hong Kong companies have started to offer remote working opportunities in the past six months, only 30% have provided cybersecurity training to cover the new working environment, new research reveals.

Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation’s (HKIRC) new report comes as Covid-19 has forced many businesses to allow workers to do their jobs from home.

The report is based on a survey of nearly 1,800 responses from local enterprises and individuals from a variety of business sectors including financial services, information technology, education and logistics.

The survey also found that 60% of respondents said video conferencing tools very important for them to be successful, whereas 52% said the same about webmail and 43% said the same about desktop access.

The HKIRC study highlights how the risk of cyber breaches has increased as many businesses have embraced remote working during the time of Covid-19.

Another recent report from Netwrix showed that 85% of CISOs claim they have sacrificed cybersecurity to quickly enable remote working.

Moreover, 23% of professionals working from home have used unauthorised devices, which has increased the risk of breaches, according to recent research from CybSafe, the London-based cybersecurity software platform.

Additionally, that research found that 20% hadn’t installed updates to collaboration and video conferencing tools like Zoom, and 23% said they hadn’t installed software updates to devices connected to their home wifi.
