If India wants to revive its economy, then it should make it easier to sell things online, according to a top Amazon executive.
“There is so much opportunity to just let ecommerce thrive versus trying to define every single guard rail under which it should operate,” Amit Agarwal, senior vice president and country manager of India at Amazon, told Reuters.
He continued by arguing that e-commerce could “accelerate India’s economy in a big way, if it’s just allowed to thrive”, empowering SMEs to sell online.
India changed its rules around e-commerce earlier this year, which created additional hurdles for companies like Amazon. Contrary to Agarwal’s boast, the Government argued that the rules were in place to protect small traders as well as people’s privacy.
Agarwal made the claim as Amazon was opening a new campus in Hyderabad.
