Insurance Europe, alongside nine other European associations, has called upon the European Commission’s President, Ursula von der Leyen, to expedite crucial EU legislation on access to vehicle data.
The nine European associations, which represent independent automotive service providers and consumers, are now working with the group to lobby for the European Commission’s muted plan for legislation on access to in-vehicle data, functions and resources, according to Reinsurance News.
The touted plans are claimed to be more necessary than ever, with insurers now chastising the EU’s Data Act – claiming that it doesn’t address issues related to the market structure or data access.
Modern vehicles hold vast potential for safer and smarter mobility in Europe due to their interconnectedness.
Yet, the manufacturer’s exclusive control over vehicle data limits innovation, stifles competition, narrows choices, increases prices, and weakens Europe’s global competitiveness, assert industry stakeholders.
Insurance Europe has accused the EU of “dragging their feet”, claiming that to protect consumer choice, and enforce true competition in the space, the EU show proactivity to this and put in place sector-specific regulations.
Yann Arnaud, Director of Responses to Customer Needs & Innovation at MACIF, the French insurer, commented, “There is currently no level playing field in accessing vehicle data which is stifling competition and innovation. The European Commission must stop dragging its feet and urgently put forward EU regulation.
“This will enable insurers to provide better products and services to support the climate transition and improve road safety. It will also help them understand and manage the risks related to new and future forms of mobility, such as autonomous driving. Opening data access will prevent a few big companies controlling data and instead create a competitive market that delivers for Europeans.”
