A Moscow court has slapped a $358m fine on Google for a failure to restrict access to information prohibited in the country.
According to Bleeping Computer, an announcement by Roskomnadzor – Russia’s internet watchdog – Google and its subsidiary YouTube have failed to remove a range of materials even after multiple requests from the Russian IT controller.
These materials include information about the course of the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine, content promoting extremism and terrorism as well as content promoting harmful acts for the life and health and minors and information that promotes participation in unauthorised mass actions.
Roskomnadzor previously fined Google $1.2m last month due to the failure to remove the said information, adding that the new fine was calculated on the basis of the businesses’ annual business turnover in Russia.
Alongside the fine, Russian users of Google Search and YouTube will now see a warning about the company violating the law and won’t be allowed to place advertisements or use them as information sources.
