Last year saw a record level of investment into RegTech companies based in the “Rest of World”, with just under $2.5bn invested. This total is more than 4.8 times greater than the previous record year of 2017 when $492m was invested and almost 70 times larger than the $36.5m raised by RegTech companies outside of North America and Europe in 2014.
The new record funding can be attributed to Beijing-based SenseTime, which raised three separate funding rounds in 2018, netting more than $2.2bn in proceeds.
Deal activity has also been in an upward trend, almost trebling from nine in 2014 to 23 in 2018. Jakarta-based OnlinePajak, a tax compliance solution provider, raised $25m of Series B funding from investors including Warburg Pincus and Sequoia Capital India. This was the largest RegTech deal in Asia in Q4 2018 and In April 2018, OnlinePajak was recognized by the World Economic Forum as one of the world’s tech pioneers.
