US unveils cyber safety review board in public-private collaboration

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have launched the first ever cyber safety review board with the goal of boosting cybersecurity in the US.

According to Security Week, the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) has been established as instructed by the executive order signed by President Joe Biden in May 2021 to improve cyber defences.

Other members of the board include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Department of Justice, Department of Defense, Office of Management and Budget, Office of the National Cyber Director, National Security Agency, the FBI, Luta Security, Center for Internet Security, CrowdStrike, Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks and Verizon.

The board will be headed by DHS under-secretary for policy Robert Silvers and senior director for security engineering at Google Heather Adkins serving as deputy chair.

The CSRB has been tasked with reviewing and scrutinising major cybersecurity events to help the government, industry and security community protect the country’s networks and infrastructure better. In addition, the board will deliver ‘strategic recommendations’ to the President and the Secretary of Homeland Security.

The DHS is first reviewing the recent Log4j vulnerabilities that have been exploited by cybercriminals and threat actors sponsored by the state. The first report is anticipated to be finished this summer and will provide recommendations for bolster security and incident response based on this incident.
