The US government is set to approve a ‘hack-back’ approach to dealing with foreign adversaries, Security Week has revealed.
The publication added that alongside this aggressive approach there will also be mandatory regulation of critical infrastructure vendors.
According to early reporting on the strategy, President Biden’s administration is considering the final details of the strategy that will seek to use regulation to level the national security playing field.
The document underlines, “[While] voluntary approaches to critical infrastructure cybersecurity have produced meaningful improvements, the lack of mandatory requirements has too often resulted in inconsistent and, in many cases inadequate, outcomes.” The government document calls for a dramatic shift of liability “onto those entities that fail to take reasonable precautions to secure their software.”
The strategy was created by the Office of the National Cyber Director also and also gives high-level authorisation to law enforcement and intelligence agencies to hack into foreign networks to prevent attacks or retaliate against APT campaigns.
