Several European regulators remove emergency bans on short-selling and similar restrictions

COVID-19 has forced a lot of regulators to take special measures to stabilise the market, but some are now removing those restrictions.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities markets regulator, has noted that several European national competent authorities (NCAs) have decided not to renewal emergency restrictions on short selling and similar transactions.

The NCAs include Finanzmarktaufsicht (FMA) of Austria; Financial Securities and Markets Authority (FSMA) of Belgium; Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) of France; Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) of Greece; and Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV) of Spain.

Moreover, ESMA noted that Italy’s Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB) has decided to lift some of the restrictions ahead of its earlier end-date on June 18, 2020.
