Mitek releases new spoof-proof identity verification service

Digital identity verification platform Mitek Systems has created a new ‘spoof-proof’ facial comparison solution and it only requires one selfie.

The Liveness Detection feature, which works across all digital channels, enables a consumer to get verification by only submitting an identity document along with a selfie image. The two files are then analysed with facial comparison technology which notes information such as texture, lightning and other factors which can identify any impersonation.

Its platform assesses whether the documents are using any deception methods such as printed photos, video replays, low-quality and realistic silicon masks, and doll and mannequin faces. The company claims beta tests saw significant improvements to flagging impersonation attempts.

This tool differs from other identity verification services which tend to request a video selfie to help assess any impersonation tricks.

Mitek chief technology officer Stephen Ritter said, “Increasingly, your digital identity is your gateway to everything you do in both the digital and physical worlds. It’s how you buy goods, send and receive money, and even exchange notes with your doctor.

“Mitek is setting the standard for digital identity verification, enabling enterprises to provide the highest level of security and convenience for consumers everywhere they need it.”

The mobile digital identity industry is expected to see an 800% growth rate from now until 2024, when it will be worth around $7bn, according to a study from Juniper Research.
