FBI warns of potential cyberthreats to 2020 Olympic Games

The FBI has warned of potential cyber threat actors targeted the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

According to Bleeping Computer, the Bureau has warned of potential threats although evidence of attacks planned are yet to be uncovered.

The FBI said that while it is not aware of any ‘specific cyber threat’ against these Olympics, it encourages partners to remain vigilant and maintain best practices in their network and digital environment.

The organisation also explained that attacks coordinated by criminals on nation-state threat actors targeting the games could involve distributed denial of service attacks, social engineering, phishing campaigns, ransomware or insider threats.

There is also the possibility that such an attack could lead to the blocking of live broadcasts and damaging digital infrastructure.

The publication also highlighted that this year’s Olympics Games come with an increased potential to attract more attention from threat actors due to the fact this will be first to be viewed exclusively through TV broadcast and digital platforms due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
