FBI establishes cryptocurrency unit

The FBI is setting up a cryptocurrency-focused unit that will look to work closely with the US Justice Department.

The National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET) will be headed by new director Eun Young Choi, who is an experienced prosecutor.

Choi will work alongside the FBI’s news Virtual Asset Exploitation Unit, which is a team of cryptocurrency experts that are dedicating to providing analysis, support and training across the bureau.

The NCET will work on the Justice Department’s cases involving the criminal use of digital assets, with a specific focus on virtual currency exchanges, infrastructure providers, mixing and tumbling services and other entities that are enabling the misuse of cryptocurrency.

Choi said, “The NCET will play a pivotal role in ensuring that as the technology surrounding digital assets grows and evolves, the department in turn accelerates and expands its efforts to combat their illicit abuse by criminals of all kinds.”
