European Commission explores deeper protectionist antitrust rules

The European Commission is exploring deeper protectionist antitrust rules and to encourage businesses to share data, according to a report from Reuters.

This change comes as a way of improving the operations of European companies in global markets, according to strategy documents seen by Reuters.

Furthermore, the new strategy will offer stricter trade defense instruments on companies that appear to be unfairly benefiting from foreign subsidies, the article claims.

In the document, it states the EU is not aiming to encourage protectionist policies and shielding uncompetitive industries. That said, it is not going to let third countries or companies undercut fair competition in the single market on global markets.

Earlier in the month, the European Commission deployed new rules which enhance consumer protections in online marketplaces. The rules increase transparency for online marketplaces by making it clearer whether products are not sold by a trader or individual.

The changes also ban submissions of fake reviews or endorsements.
