Belgian government suffers second damaging cyberattack of 2021

The Belgian defence ministry has been hit by a cyberattack after threat actors exploited the Log4Shell vulnerability.

According to Security Affairs, the attack was uncovered last week and was disclosed by the government this week. However, the publication noted the security breach has blocked the ministry’s activities for ‘several days’.

The defence ministry confirmed the attack but has yet to provide any further information on the matter.

A spokesperson for Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedoner said the ministry’s teams have been working hard in past days to secure its networks. The government underlined it will continue to invest in cybersecurity going forward.

A ministry spokesperson also detailed that ‘’hackers exploited a vulnerability in software called Log4j, which was discovered earlier in December’.

Earlier this year, Belgium’s Federal Public Service Interior claimed it has suffered a ‘complex, sophisticated and targeted cyberattack’ to its IT system.
