Shift Technology deal pushes RegTech investment in Europe to nearly $200m in Q1 2019

RegTech companies in Europe have raised more than $1.2bn since 2014 across 253 deals, with investment increasing by more than 4.6x between 2014 and 2018. Deal activity almost doubled between 2014 and 2018, with average deal sizes growing from $2.1m in 2014 to $5.5m last year.

RegTech investment in Europe hit a record $311.8m in 2018, across 57 deals, which is 88.2% of the total capital raised in 2015 and 2016 combined. However, European RegTech companies raised $187.8m across 13 transactions in Q1 2019, already greater than 60% of the total capital raised in 2018.

Shift Technology, a Paris-based fraud detection solution provider to the insurance industry, raised a $60m Series C investment in March which pushed total Q1 2019 funding to almost $190m. This investment round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from Iris Capital and others, and will support the company’s expansion, bolstering Shift’s existing global presence, particularly in the US and Japanese markets.
