A Russian nuclear scientist has been fined for using one of the country’s most powerful super computers, located in a top secret lab, to mine bitcoin.
The Sarov city court has fined Denis Baykov ₽450,000, roughly the same as $7,000, after finding him guilty of illegally accessing computer information and violating computer operation rules. He is one out of three scientists accused of using the computer in this way. The other two are awaiting sentencing, according to the Moscow Times.
The supercomputer was reportedly able to perform 1,000 trillion transactions per second.
One of the defendants’ lawyers said that the scientists had developed software that meant they could avoid detection and mine bitcoin for some time before getting caught. He did not say how long it went on.
