Onfido partners with INTERPOL to support detection of fake IDs

Onfido has formed a partnership with INTERPOL to support government officials with detecting fraudulent identity documents.

The identity verification startup is holding a three-day training course for government officials in Southeast Asia at the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). Its goal is to help them better detect fraudulent identity documents.

Participants will range across police, border control agents, and immigration officials within INTERPOL member countries: Cambodia, Load, Philippines and Vietnam.

Taking place in Manila later this month, the course will focus on methods such as intaglio, offset, letterpress, screen printing, inkjet, laser, thermal transfer, laser engraving which are used to create these fake documents and how fraudsters emulate them with readily available technology.

The course will detail the security features embedded in official government IDs and practical exercises to identify counterfeits, forgeries, fantasy and fraudulently obtained documents.

In addition to this Onfido will explain various digital attack vectors and how to overcome them. Showcasing the difference between 3D and 2D document checks, imaging techniques to augment decision-making, attack vector trends, sophisticated attacks, imposter detection and the Glasgow Test, and outline currently known vulnerabilities.

Onfido fraud and document expert Michael Van Gestel said, “Onfido is excited to be teaming up with INTERPOL, the world’s largest international police organization, to bring our combined industry knowledge and fraud expertise to government officials across Southeast Asia.

“As criminals get more sophisticated in designing new attack vectors, there has never been a more important time to unify our knowledge of both 3D and 2D document authentication and share this in a unique training course.”

Onfido uses machine learning technology to help users verify identities through the upload of a photo identity document and a selfie. Once verified via the system, users can access a selection of online services, helping businesses to improve their onboarding.

This is just the latest partnership formed by Onfido, which has been on a spree for the past few months. A couple of weeks back, the RegTech startup made a deal with 2nd Address to verify the identities of users and build trust in the community.

Other recent companies to form partnerships with Onfido in the last few months include RVshare, BitPay and WORBLI.
