IDEX Biometrics partners with Tongxin Microelectronics to create biometric card

IDEX Biometrics fingerprint identification and authentication solution builder, is collaborating with Tongxin Microelectronics (TMC) to create a biometric card.

TMC, a China-based smart card builder, will work with IDEX to build a biometric smart card solution for end-customer implementation.

The card will be a dual-interface solution which combines the biometric sensor of IDEX with the secure element (a microprocessor chip) of TMC into a single card. With this, the card will accept a match of the biometrics and for the secure element, increasing security of the card.

TMC Vice President Yimin Ding said, “Through the rapid adoption of sensors in smart phones people have become accustomed to biometric authentication. It is a very logical next step to introduce this usability and security in payment cards.

“The combined solution, with our secure element and IDEX’s fingerprint sensor which enables matching in the secure element, creates a very compelling value proposition; a simple and secure turn-key solution for customers. This reduces complexity and cost for the card manufacturers.

IDEX has made a number of partnerships within the FinTech space over the past year.  Last year, it formed a deal with Infineon Technologies with the goal of building a biometric integrated payment card.

The payment cards offer consumers the ability to authenticate payments on their card by scanning a fingerprint.

Other similar partnerships have been made with CEC Huada Electronic Design (HED), Shenzhen Excelsecu Data Technology, and Chutian Dragon.

IDEX Biometrics CEO Stan Swearingen said, “The demand for biometric smart cards is growing thanks to their increased security and convenience for end users. Therefore, it is critical for card manufacturers that the biometric solutions are compatible with the secure element in the card, known as the EMV chip.”
