Canadian government launches new programme to boost cybersecurity among SMEs

SMEs in Canada were just given a whole new way of strengthening their digital defences with the government launching a new cybersecurity certification programme.

CyberSecure Canada will be a voluntary certificate aiming to give small enterprises the tools needed to establish a cybersecurity baseline. By doing so, the government hopes SMEs will be able to give their customers greater confidence and themselves a new competitive advantage.

The initiative is part of the country’s National Cyber Security Strategy. The Communications Security Establishment will be the technical authority of the programme.

Bill Morneau, Canada’s minister of finance, announced the new programme. “There’s so much Canadians can do online – from connecting with friends and family, to personal shopping, to building a business,” he said. “This online activity is good for our economy and helps create good, well-paying jobs. At the same time, it’s critical that Canadians feel confident about the security of their interactions and information. Today’s announcement is an investment in skills, in businesses and in the future of our economy.”
